Many overseas platforms, including Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Google services, and WhatsApp, are not officially available in mainland China. As a result, access to these services is restricted at the network level.
It is worth noting that these restrictions also apply to public Wi-Fi and hotel Wi-Fi within China. Connecting to Wi-Fi does not automatically grant you access to blocked services, because the filtering mechanism operates at the network level rather than depending on which hotel router you connect to.

While direct access is restricted, many international travellers use the following two methods to stay connected. Both solutions work by routing data traffic through overseas gateways rather than through mainland China’s standard internet routing infrastructure.
Option 1: International Roaming with an Overseas SIM Card
If you have a non-mainland China SIM card, such as one from the US, Australia, or Europe, with international roaming enabled, your mobile data traffic in China may be routed through your carrier’s overseas network. In such cases, your traffic may not pass through the same filtering infrastructure used by mainland China’s domestic internet connections, allowing you to access Twitter/X and other overseas applications.
Option 2: Travel-Specific eSIMs
There are travel-focused eSIM products on the market that route data traffic through Hong Kong, Singapore, or other overseas locations. After purchasing and activating such an eSIM, you may also be able to access services that are otherwise restricted in mainland China.
One important point: you should purchase and set up the eSIM before entering mainland China. Once you arrive, the websites of some eSIM providers may become inaccessible, making it difficult to download or configure the eSIM after arrival.

Regarding VPNs: Although VPNs are commonly used to circumvent network restrictions, downloading or connecting to VPN services within mainland China can be unstable or difficult. Some VPN services may also be subject to interference.
Receiving verification codes: If you rely on an overseas mobile number to receive SMS verification codes for bank accounts or other important services, enabling international roaming can help you continue receiving messages while in China. Some overseas services may not support sending verification codes to Chinese mobile numbers.
Alternative apps: While in China, you can use local alternatives for similar functions. For example, Weibo offers some features similar to Twitter/X, while WeChat is the messaging platform widely used by people in China. Downloading WeChat, Alipay, Amap, and other useful apps before your trip can make travelling in China much easier.
